Spirit of Giving

In 2017, the Hippos started a new tradition of giving. Each season we select a charitable organization to support and funds are typically raised by way of a swim-a-thon.

Swim-a-thon was put on hiatus during 2020 and 2021 swim seasons. In 2021, our team instead organized a FUNdraiser food drive and donated over 1000 pounds of food to Food for Others.

Our third annual Swim-A-Thon fundraiser on Monday, July 22 will benefit The Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia (DSANV). The mission of DSANV is to "ensure that all individuals with Down syndrome and their families receive the support necessary to participate in, contribute to and achieve fulfillment of life in their community."

This Swim-A-Thon provides our swimmers with the opportunity to develop team spirit and camaraderie and work together as a team to give back to the community.

Who can participate: All swim team members, swim team parents and High Point Pool Members.

When: Monday, July 22, 2019, from 7:30-10:30 AM (in lieu of PRACTICE)

Team Goal: Swim over 70 miles and collect $7,000 in donations

Individual Goal: Swim 66 laps and collect as many pledges as possible

All participants are asked to swim 66 laps (equivalent to one mile). Laps can be swum continuously or in intervals with breaks. Swimmers can use kick-boards, fins, noodles, etc., to complete their individual goal. The only requirement is that participants are asked to obtain one or more sponsors to make a flat donation or a pledge with the swimmer to donate per lap. For example:

  • A sponsor may pledge $100 flat, no matter how many laps are completed.
  • Another sponsor may pledge $5.00 for every lap completed.


Pledge donations may be made online at The Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia or via check. For online donations, please annotate “HPP swim-a-thon” in the note space. Checks should be made payable to DSANV. Please annotate “HPP swim-a-thon” and include an email on the check to receive a donation receipt. Each donor who pays by check or online will receive a donation receipt from the DSANV approximately 4 - 6 weeks after the swim-a-thon.

Pledges will be collected the day of the swim-a-thon and up until July 27, at the End-of-Season Banquet. Coach Mariel will collect check donations and submit them to the DSANV.


To hold the swim-a-thon and meet our goal, we need many volunteers.

  • Check In Volunteers
  • Pledge Sheet Collectors
  • Card Writers to track the # of laps each participant swims
  • Healthy food donations such as small yogurt cups, fruit, mini muffins and protein snacks, low sugar drinks
  • Clean Up Volunteers
  • Prize Donations
